I think Mary wrestled, too

A writer friend asks me a question about that Mary story when she responded to the Angel Gabriel after learning she was about to birth God's Son. She asks me:

"Did Mary really simply reply to God with,
'OK, Lord, I trust you. Whatever you think is best. Do unto me as you see fit'?

"Or was there more of a discussion?"

"Because, that was a pretty big dream God was inviting her to join, you know?"

And I do.

I can see it now from the other side of where Mary was standing. I'm smiling and I'm just so grateful for her willingness, yet I am certain that there was a wrestle.

Right away I think about a private book group conversation I'm a part of around vulnerability and shame.

I suggest to my friend that maybe the people of the Bible wrestled just like we do, keeping their wonder and doubt and insecurities all tucked inside deep.

I'm sure the Biblical heroes wrestled. Jesus hadn't been resurrected yet and they didn't know the peace His Spirit would bring. They were faced with a choice to believe things there was absolutely no evidence of yet (from their point of view) and it was so different from what we have to base our faith on.

Latching onto dreams is plain risky business.

How we come to live by faith is so profoundly personal and I venture to guess we all have faced a moment or two (or twenty gazillion) where we've wondered if we're the only one with the doubt.

Vulnerability can shame us.

I like to think Mary wrestled hard and fought the same questions I fight so often. Yet, I consider a different view.

What was she to do? I mean, pregnant?! Mary knew that wasn't of her own accord and so the reality of what was happening was the evidence she needed.

Some. Thing. was happening. And it was profound.

When you know without a shadow of a doubt that you had nothing to do something, you kind of have no choice but to believe. As crazy as that something may seem, you find yourself saddled up for the ride because there's simply no other explanation and really, how can this be? I've not . . .

And so, you believe. You say, "OK . . ." {gulp}

So I started out thinking Mary wrestled. And I still think she did. I think her wrestling was more with herself, though, and her enough-ness.

I'm sure Mary thought: Really, God? I mean, REALLY?!????!!!

(Just like I do.)

The God of the Universe chose this seemingly-average woman to do a not so average task: to birth the Messiah. The awesomeness of this is more than profound. It's exhilarating. And Mary had to wait to see it happen.

I can imagine Mary's excitement was probably tucked down deep and her confusion swirling tight around as she deliberated her good enough-ness.

     People will question.

          They will wonder why her.
          They will scoff.
          They will envy.
They will peer in to her life with hands cupped around their eyes
They will whisper nonsense . . . all in the name of Wonder.

Mary did just what God said would happen. She saddled up and lived the life called for her.

I think vulnerability was the same then as it is for us now, it just wears different clothes and fashions different colors. I also think God still assigns miraculous dreams to the seemingly-average folk. Big ones. His size ones that seem to come from left field and don't appear to make a bit of sense at the moment.

Our wrestling is accepted.
Our wonder is encouraged.
Our good enough-ness is allowed to be questioned.

And in the end, we'll realize we have no choice but to believe because it's happening -- our uniquely crafted story, His will -- whether we've given Him permission or not.

: : :

I breathe in deep and hold my mug of tea as I look out my office window at the sunshine and chirping birds. Life *whirls and twirls* around me.

I think about how I scavenge for answers and dare to question the very likelihood of dreams coming true. Still, it's happening -- my God-made life -- and my gathering of answers doesn't make a bit of difference.

: : :

Suddenly I smell leather. I hear the snort and heavy breathing. It's time I saddle up.

considering Christmas

There are things I haven't done this Christmas season that I normally do.

1. bought, filled out, and mailed Christmas cards
2. taken a family picture
3. stepped foot in a store to shop
4. made cookies
5. eaten cookies
6. planned, prepared for, or attended a party
7. opened the Advent calendar
8. watched a "Christmasy" type of movie
9. considered a new year's resolution
10. stressed out.

Then a friend asked me this:

"So what things have you done to celebrate Christmas?"

I was perplexed at her question, because to me it was simple. And yet, my response confused her even more.

So here it is just a few days away from Christmas Day and even though it may not make sense for some, I'm feeling even more peace for my answer.

Christmas for me this year is about considering the simple in the margins of life.

Allowing space to wonder and wrestle with Why. To live in the space of confusion and crazy.

Because, the truth is things don't define Christmas. Neither does snow or shiny happy people.

I understand how to some it doesn't feel Christmasy without snow. I've been known to say it myself.

Still, Christmas is here.

And it doesn't feel very much like Christmas when the news tells horrifying stories of children and adults having been senselessly killed. Or when sadness overwhelms.

But it is.

Christmas was made for the brokenhearted, the confused and weary.

It isn't about the shiny paper or perfect gift. And it isn't about the cookies or the parties.

Christmas is about . . . the questions
     . . . the seeking
          . . . the searching
               . . . the Wonder.

Christmas is about the bending low to consider His purpose in all. The unwrapping of grace -- moment by moment, every single day.

Because, He still performs miracles. And sometimes they're found mostly in our hearts. So when we allow space to consider the *whirl and twirl* of our days and our place in this life, He meets us there.

Christmas is more than the doing and the things.

wonder

It's been a theme in my year.

This grappling for what might be and could possibly be.

I've leaned in and asked hard questions that have required me to sacrifice -- mostly fear.

This year has requested me to bend more in my stiff rigidness.

To live with less self control and instead, to be flexible as He reveals His will.

To live radically obedient to His invitations.

I've been challenged to consider far beyond my imagination -- mostly to trust, though I cannot see.

*Wonder* bubbled up as a constant word my spirit considered this year.

I've been willing to go where my faith is stretching me to live -- in surrender.

Because, moment-by-moment matters. Not just tomorrow.

And, everyday He wants me to live in peace.

To rest in the joy He gives me, for today -- mostly to believe ...

          All. Is. For. Purpose.

So I wonder about those Big Dreams that whisper in the *whirl and twirl* of my days.

I say Yes to their craziness. And I {still} believe in miracles.

Today's post was part of my friend, Lisa-Jo's fun challenge each Friday to take five and Just. Write.

"...for five, short, bold beautiful minutes... unscripted and unedited...
without worrying if it's just right or not."

wonder and a dream

Last week I was blown away by a simple comment by an eight-year-old Boy-Man.

The child who calls me Momma stepped outside of himself for one speck of a moment and thought of others.

He shared a God-size dream and *I noticed.*

It was simple, really. Perhaps not even intentional. Maybe attention seeking.

But the thing is, I noticed. And he said it.

He trick-or-treated for UNICEF and declared he wanted to raise enough money for a school.

Perhaps it was the voice of his teacher who instigated the thought and taught her class about the power of giving and the purpose of the little box.

He paid attention, nonetheless. And something One provoked his heart.

: : :

Education matters.

It's empowering. It's confidence building. It's life changing.

Yesterday I blew it in the patient category.

I wanted more from that Boy-Man than he was willing to give.

I saw more potential than he wanted to admit.

I nearly demanded his attention and controlled his choices.

The visions I have for the Boy-Man...and our lives...and the world...are B I G, and I am sometimes doubt-filled of this hope that wells within me.

All these thoughts come swirling together today -- the Boy's comment and my dreams.

And I wonder...

What is He doing in us?

The sprinkles of consideration for another...

     The Hope that rushes forth...

     The visions for leading...

How will we be a part of this?

I wonder...

And I stand ready.

awake

Body set on autopilot, he awakens at exactly the same time every day.

Glancing over at his clock to see if it gives him permission to get out of bed, he sees that it is indeed seven o'clock.

His feet hit the floor practically running to his dresser.

He comes downstairs without a bit of angst for the day evident on his face. He is ready for what might come and he is inquisitive to what that might be.

This Boy-Man thinks things all. the. time.

Always wondering, always asking, always thinking.

He isn't the kind of child who would rather stay in his pj's all day and slouch on the couch. Sure, he'll turn it on once in awhile, only to find that his mind is going to places the television isn't. And so, it doesn't meet his curiosity; he moves on to explore, play, think and wonder.

When this Boy-Man is awake, life is abundant. There isn't much fear for this seven year old. His awakeness breathes Wonder.

My heart longs to be this awake in life.

To Wonder about every. thing. and for every moment to be an exploration.

And finally I begin to See why this word has been so much on my heart. For, a child truly does lead us to Him.
