roots

I'm still reeling from the words I heard him say on Halloween night.

     "Trick-or-treat for UNICEF, please."

And I'm like, Are you kidding me? Is this for Real?

And then this,

"I want to raise money for a school!"

It's almost too much to contain. This joy. The bubbling over of wonder that nearly makes me cry.

What will his heart do with this one life?

I want to tell him about this idea poking my heart.

And...he's off...scurrying in the land of eight-year-old-boy-Halloween-happy.

So much of me wants to sit him down awhile and preach it. And then I remember how He's got this.

And him.
And us.
And me.

And preaching can do more harm than good.

Too often I think it's all my job. This parenting. This teaching. This encouraging.

And then I remember, it's Him.

Our roots are planted in Him. Deep. Firm. Purpose-filled.

Today's post was part of my friend, Lisa-Jo's fun challenge each Friday to take five and Just. Write.

"...for five, short, bold beautiful minutes... unscripted and unedited...
without worrying if it's just right or not."

  1. Ah yes. Those God moments when he allows us to see just a glimpse into how he is working, changing, nourishing those roots. Delighted to be reading here Amy! Visiting from FMF!

  2. It's hard as a parent to know when our words are needed and when we can just back off and know that His spirit works in the silences, the heart moments with Him. I love both of your hearts in this.

  3. Ah yes... it's so good and precious and often vital for us to remember that we are not in charge and it is not all up to us (thank goodness!) I loved, "Our roots are planted in Him. Deep. Firm. Purpose-filled." Amen! (I also loved the 'land of eight-year-old-boy-Halloween-happy' line too... we gotta get us some of that!!!)
